The costly pitfalls
  • NEVER pay to register: entry on dvprogram.state.gov (Kentucky Consular Center) is 100% free; the Douala/Yaounde 'agencies' charging for registration are scams.
  • Beware fake 'Congratulations you won' emails: the KCC never notifies winners by email or phone; only the Entrant Status Check with your confirmation number is official.
  • Only one entry per person: letting several 'agents' submit for you creates duplicates that trigger automatic disqualification.
Insider tips
  • The registration window is short (roughly early October to early November each year): enter early to avoid the site overload in the final days.
  • Africa has high selection odds and Cameroon is eligible, but you need a high-school diploma OR 2 years of qualifying work experience in the last 5 years.
  • Spouses: each may submit a separate entry, doubling your odds; you must list your spouse and ALL your children or face disqualification.

The costly pitfalls
  • A 214(b) refusal is the #1 reason at Yaounde: failing to prove your ties to Cameroon (family, property, return plan) sinks the interview; never say you want to stay or work in the USA.
  • Verify the school is SEVP-certified on the ICE website before paying: avoid 'diploma mills' and agents promising a guaranteed visa for a fee.
  • Pay the SEVIS I-901 (350 USD) BEFORE the interview and bring the printed receipt: forgetting it or booking the interview before paying stalls your case.
Insider tips
  • Budget the true total cost: SEVIS I-901 350 USD + DS-160/MRV fee 185 USD + the new 250 USD 'visa integrity fee' (July 2025 law), on top of proof of tuition.
  • Plan ahead: the Yaounde embassy is the only post in Cameroon; you may apply up to 365 days before the start, but you can enter the USA only 30 days before the program begins at the earliest.
  • Show strong home ties: employer letter, property deeds, return job prospects and dependent family; bring the physical evidence to the interview.

The costly pitfalls
  • Nobody can self-sponsor an H-1B: without a U.S. employer who registers you in March then files the I-129, there is NO case — the 'guaranteed sponsors' sold in Douala or Yaounde are scams, since petition fees are legally the employer's responsibility.
  • Since March 2026, the lottery is WEIGHTED by wage (OEWS level 1 = 1 entry, level 4 = 4 entries): entry-level offers start at a clear disadvantage — clarify the job's wage level before registration.
  • The September 2025 proclamation demanding 100,000 USD for new petitions for beneficiaries outside the USA was struck down in court in mid-2026, but the appeal is pending: the landscape can flip back, so have the state of the law checked right before filing.
Insider tips
  • Target cap-exempt employers (universities, university hospitals, nonprofit research institutes): no lottery and year-round filing — often the best entry door for a first job.
  • Get your Cameroonian bachelor's or master's evaluated (WES, ECE) to prove U.S. bachelor's equivalence in the specialty; failing that, 3 years of documented experience substitute for 1 year of study (the 3-for-1 rule).
  • Several distinct employers can legally register the same candidate (215 USD each, at their expense) as long as each offer is genuine: multiply real offers, never fictitious registrations.

Family immigrant visa

Join a family member who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green card) through an I-130 petition — subject to the immigrant visa issuance pause that has applied to Cameroon since January 2026.

The costly pitfalls
  • Since January 21, 2026, the USA has SUSPENDED immigrant visa issuance for 75 countries including Cameroon (on 'public charge' grounds): interviews continue but no visas are issued; do not resign, sell anything or buy tickets before actual issuance.
  • A customary marriage (bride price) not registered with the civil registry is not recognized by the embassy: without a Cameroonian CIVIL marriage certificate, a spouse petition is doomed — regularize before filing.
  • Sham-marriage fraud is disqualifying FOR LIFE (section 204(c)): the Yaounde embassy cross-checks statements, runs separate interviews and can require DNA tests to prove parentage.
Insider tips
  • File the I-130 online (625 USD, versus 675 USD on paper) with a complete relationship-evidence file from day one: every request for evidence (RFE) adds months to processing that already often exceeds 2 years.
  • The 2026 I-864 threshold is 27,050 USD of annual income for a 2-person household (125% of the poverty line): if the petitioner falls short, add a joint sponsor rather than take a 221(g) refusal.
  • At the NVC, quickly pay the 325 USD (visa) + 120 USD (Affidavit of Support) and upload everything at once to be declared documentarily qualified: that date sets your place in the Yaounde interview queue.

B-1/B-2 visitor visa

Visit the United States (tourism, family) or travel for business (meetings, trade shows) on the B-1/B-2 visitor visa.

The costly pitfalls
  • A 214(b) refusal is the rule, not the exception: about 60% of Cameroonian B applications were refused in fiscal year 2025; without solid, verifiable ties to Cameroon (job, property, family), you are paying 185 USD for a near-certain refusal.
  • NEVER let an 'agent' fill your DS-160 with false answers (fake job, fake salary, fake history): the consular officer spots the inconsistencies and fraud triggers a permanent ineligibility, far worse than a simple refusal.
  • Since July 8, 2025, the visa for Cameroonians is SINGLE ENTRY with 3-month validity: do not build a multi-trip plan on one visa, and enter the USA before it expires.
Insider tips
  • Payment comes in two stages: 185 USD (MRV) at application, then a 35 USD issuance fee (payable in FCFA) ONLY if the visa is approved; also anticipate the 250 USD visa integrity fee, enacted in 2025 but not yet collected as of mid-2026.
  • Prepare the interview like a 2-3 minute oral exam: short, honest answers consistent with your DS-160, with ties documents in hand (employment and leave letter, RCCM registration, land title, children's school certificates).
  • An invitation letter or a U.S. 'sponsor' helps on the financial side but NEVER replaces your own ties: the officer is assessing you, not your host.
