The costly pitfalls

Since 22 July 2025 the care worker / senior care worker route (SOC 6135/6136) is CLOSED to overseas applicants: a Cameroonian abroad can no longer get a first CoS as a care assistant; only nurses, doctors and other health professionals remain eligible.
NEVER pay for a Certificate of Sponsorship: a genuine CoS is FREE. The BBC investigation (CareerEdu agency) exposed agents charging £15,000-20,000 for non-existent jobs or fake payroll records.
Check the employer is on the gov.uk register of licensed sponsors and that pay meets at least £25,000/year and the NHS going rate; a CoS from an unlisted or underpaying sponsor leads to refusal.

Insider tips

The Health and Care Worker visa is EXEMPT from the IHS (saving £1,035/year over the whole visa) and has reduced visa fees: never pay IHS under this category.
Since 8 January 2026 the required English level rose from B1 to B2 for new Skilled Worker applicants: take an IELTS for UKVI (SELT), not ordinary academic IELTS, at a UKVI-approved centre.
Real current openings are for registered nurses (NMC registration / OSCE), doctors, radiographers, etc.: target NHS Trusts and the NHS Jobs portal directly rather than 'care agencies'.

The costly pitfalls

Underestimating maintenance funds: since 11 November 2025 you need £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month outside London, for up to 9 months (~£13,761 / £10,539) on top of tuition; an insufficient amount means automatic refusal.
Mishandling the 28-day rule: funds must sit for 28 CONSECUTIVE days and the closing balance be dated within 31 days of the application; moving money in just before (a too-recent account) fails the application.
CAS errors: apply for the visa only AFTER the CAS is issued (valid 6 months); any mismatch of name, passport number or course dates between CAS and application causes refusal.

Insider tips

The student IHS is the reduced rate of £776/year (vs £1,035), payable in full and upfront: budget it separately from tuition and maintenance funds.
The Graduate Route (post-study work) has been shortened to 18 months (from 2 years): plan your career entry accordingly.
Paying part of your tuition to the university and having it stated on the CAS REDUCES the maintenance amount you must show: pay a deposit and get it recorded.

Join a partner who is British or settled in the UK: sponsor's £29,000 income threshold and certified A1 English.

The costly pitfalls

Underestimated budget: since 8 April 2026 the partner application from outside the UK costs GBP 2,064 in fees + GBP 3,105 IHS, i.e. GBP 5,169 (nearly 4 million FCFA) PER applicant, non-refundable if refused.
Badly formatted income evidence: the sponsor's GBP 29,000 requires precise documents (6 months of payslips + matching bank statements + employer letter, in Appendix FM-SE formats); a single missing or inconsistent item is enough for refusal.
A customary or religious marriage not registered with the Cameroonian civil registry = not recognised by the Home Office: have the union transcribed and produce an official marriage certificate with a certified English translation.

Insider tips

Savings can replace income: GBP 88,500 covers the whole threshold, and above GBP 16,000 every GBP 2.50 of savings offsets GBP 1 of missing income — combine the sponsor's salary with the couple's savings.
The threshold remains GBP 29,000: in June 2025 the MAC recommended LOWERING it (a GBP 23,000-25,000 band) and the rise to GBP 38,700 was dropped; check the current figure on GOV.UK just before applying.
Expect about 12 weeks for a family visa decision (much longer than a work visa): apply as soon as the file is complete and do not schedule a ceremony or tickets around an assumed date.

Visit the UK for up to 6 months: tourism, family, or permitted business activities (meetings, conferences, negotiations).

Weak ties = refusal reason No. 1: without a documented stable job, business (RCCM) or dependants in Cameroon, the officer concludes you will not leave — about 1 in 4 visitor applications is refused, and scrutiny of Cameroonians has hardened since the March 2026 'visa brake'.
No remedy for a visitor refusal: there is no appeal, you must reapply (and lose another GBP 135) with a corrected file; every refusal must be declared in ALL your future applications (UK, Schengen, Canada...).
A bank account inflated on the eve of applying or 'borrowed' statements: the mismatch between balance and declared income gets detected, and a fake document earns a 10-year UK ban.

Insider tips

If you visit regularly (family, business), the long-term visa pays off: 2 years GBP 506, 5 years GBP 903, 10 years GBP 1,128, with stays of up to 6 months per entry — more credible after a first well-respected UK visa.
Attach a one-page cover letter tying everything together: precise purpose, dates, who pays for what, and why you will return (job, business, family) — the officer decides in minutes, make the reading easy.
Travel history helps enormously: used and respected Schengen or African visas reassure; with a blank first passport, work twice as hard on ties and funding.

Start an innovative business in the UK: mandatory endorsement from an approved body and B2 English. A route to settlement in 3 years.

The costly pitfalls

A non-innovative venture = endorsement refused: import-export, food service, hairdressing or general trade fail the 'innovative, viable, scalable' triple test; the GBP 1,000 endorsement fee is then lost.
Never pay an 'agent' who guarantees endorsement: only UK Endorsing Services, Innovator International and Envestors Limited (April 2026 list, recheck on GOV.UK) issue endorsements, via direct online application — no middleman improves your odds.
Personal funds mixed with capital: the GBP 1,270 maintenance must be SEPARATE from the investment funds and held for 28 consecutive days (closing balance within 31 days of applying), or you face refusal.

Insider tips

No legal GBP 50,000 minimum since April 2023: what matters is a credible business plan with coherent funding (GBP 25,000-50,000 remains a benchmark) and genuine knowledge of the UK market.
It is the fastest business route to settlement: ILR possible after just 3 years if the company hits 2 growth milestones (e.g. GBP 50,000 invested, 5 jobs created, GBP 1 million revenue) — build your dashboard from day one.
Realistic total budget: GBP 1,000 endorsement + GBP 1,357 visa + GBP 3,105 IHS + 2 x GBP 500 contact points + GBP 1,270 maintenance, i.e. about GBP 7,700 (nearly 6 million FCFA) EXCLUDING business capital and flights.
