The costly pitfalls

Do not confuse CEMAC free movement (90 days visa-free) with an automatic right to work or trade: beyond 3 months a DGDI residence card is mandatory, and salaried work requires a prior work authorization from the Labour Ministry.
Beware Oligui Nguema's national-preference policy: since the 12 August 2025 Council of Ministers, small retail, informal trade and e-commerce are reserved for Gabonese nationals; a Cameroonian opening such a business risks closure and expulsion.
Don't forget the repatriation bond (about 400,000 FCFA for a West/Central African, based on the airfare): the 150,000 FCFA card fee is NOT the total cost — the bond is a hidden charge due when you file the application.

Insider tips

The residence card fee is now unified at 150,000 FCFA for 24 months for all nationalities: this reform ended the old discriminatory rate of around 800,000 FCFA for Africans — refuse to be charged more and demand an official receipt.
Follow the correct sequence: the employer first requests the work authorization from the Labour Ministry (National Employment Office), and only then do you file your DGDI application — arriving in Gabon without an already-validated contract blocks everything.
The provisional receipt issued at filing lets you move around legally during the 3–6 week processing (up to 4–8 weeks total including the work permit): always keep it on you to avoid the irregular-stay fine of 50,000 to 100,000 FCFA.

Study in Libreville or Franceville: free entry thanks to CEMAC; what remains is enrolment, means of subsistence and the student residence card.

The costly pitfalls

CEMAC visa-free entry does NOT exempt you from the student residence card: beyond 3 months without filing at the DGDI you are staying irregularly (50,000 to 100,000 FCFA fine, risk of removal), and Gabon actually ran permit-control operations in 2025.
Do not miss UOB's online pre-enrolment window (roughly July to end of September, 'international student' category): without the pre-enrolment certificate there is no administrative enrolment — and that is a full year lost.
Leaving with just the ticket money is the classic trap: Libreville is one of Central Africa's most expensive cities, there is no automatic scholarship or housing aid, and without proof of means (about 150,000 FCFA/month) your residence card can be refused.

Insider tips

Pre-enrol from Cameroon on UOB's online portal as soon as it opens (July) and print the certificate in several copies: it serves for administrative enrolment, the DGDI file and entry checks.
Gabonese teaching is in French and no language test is required from a Cameroonian, even an anglophone: put your budget into housing and the residence card rather than pointless certifications.
The receipt issued when you file at the DGDI acts as a provisional permit during the 3 to 6 weeks of production: always keep it on you, then renew the card at least 2 months before expiry via the e-DGDI portal (edgdi.dgdi.ga).

Join a relative settled in Gabon: entry is free (CEMAC); settling durably requires the residence card, backed by the relative's situation.

The costly pitfalls

If your relative is themselves in an irregular situation or holds an expired residence card, your WHOLE application collapses: check their card's validity before buying a single ticket.
A family link not proven by legalized records (town hall or sub-prefecture, then MINREX in Yaounde) is no link at all for the DGDI, and 'arranged' records are forgery: a fake-documents ring was dismantled in Libreville in 2025.
CEMAC free movement creates no family residence right: beyond 90 days, EACH family member, children included, needs their own residence card, and the fees multiply accordingly.

Insider tips

Have your relative obtain the accommodation certificate (neighbourhood chief, 1,000 to 2,000 FCFA, or town hall) dated as close to your departure as possible — it is only valid about 3 months — and travel with a copy for the border.
Legalize birth and marriage certificates in Cameroon in SEVERAL certified copies before leaving: redoing or legalizing a record from Libreville takes months and costs far more.
File the whole family's applications together at the DGDI, with your relative present carrying their originals (residence card, lease, proof of resources): one grouped, consistent file goes down better than a string of isolated ones.

Visit Gabon for up to 90 days without a visa under CEMAC free movement — a valid passport and means of stay suffice.

90 days means 90 days: without leaving or filing for a residence card before the deadline, you slip into irregular stay (50,000 to 100,000 FCFA fine, possible removal) — in 2025 Gabon ran a control operation with Cameroonians returned to the border the same day.
CEMAC texts mention the national ID card, but in practice Gabonese posts recognize the approved BIOMETRIC passport: trying the border with only your Cameroonian ID card exposes you to being turned back.
The visa waiver is not an unconditional right of entry: the officer can demand a return ticket, proof of accommodation and means of subsistence, and refuse entry if the stay looks doubtful.

Insider tips

Always get the entry stamp, even by road: it proves your entry date, marks out your 90 days and conditions any later residence card application.
Travel with a light but complete file — biometric passport valid at least 6 months, return ticket, proof of accommodation and about 250,000 FCFA of means per month of stay: entry then goes through with no fee and no argument.
The Douala-Libreville flight takes only an hour (Afrijet, near-daily flights): book about a month ahead for a good fare; the road via Ambam, Eboro and Bitam is far cheaper but takes 2 days with many checkpoints.
